WW1 enlistment, service and medical records

Most of the following data are taken from the surviving World War 1 service and pension records (series WO363 and WO364, respectively, at the UK National Archives) of soldiers who were discharged between 1914 and 1920. Many of the original records were destroyed by bombing in 1940, and only about 40% of the service records and 25% of the pension records survived.

Images of the available service and pension records are available from the coordinator. The complete record often contains further details such as postings, medical reports and punishments.

For six months I was in charge of the platoon to which he belonged, and of a wonderful cheery crowd he was the most cheery. No matter how much work was to be done, or whatever the weather was, he seemed always to be happy. He has done his bit, the most that any man can do, he gave his life for his country." Lionel George MITCHELMORE 1914-1918 Transport Officer to the Hood Battalion commanded by Arthur Asquith (Primeminister's son), he saw much hard service on the Ancre, Miraument, Gavrelle, Passchendaale, the March Retreat and many of the advance to victory battles around Cambrai. There is a personal recommendation from Asquith contained in Len Seller's book Hood Battalion: '... There were so many acts of bravery during the battalion's advance that not all can be told; as just one example Asquith included the tale of Sub. Lieutenant George Mitchelmore in his list of recommendations for gallantry awards. 'While consolidation and the enemy counter attacks were in progress T Sub Lieutenant Lionel George Mitchelmore RNVR, as the Transport Officer, succeeded in bringing up in broad daylight by the Arras-Gavrelle road, under heavy enemy barrage, a convoy of pack animals with water for those in the firing line. He lost four men and four animals en route, and was himself wounded in the hand, but pushed forward with admirable determination and as a result delivered his loads in the village within 300 yards of the enemy's advanced elements'.  The London Gazette date for the award of the MC shows that it was not for this action and that, like many, he was passed over for an award. It is likely that the MC was for Passchendaale where the Transport Officers had a tedious time or for general good work including the mentioned Cavrelle recommendation. To be the Transport Officer in Hood Battalion for most of its time in France meant that he had to be a most resourceful and determined officer. The Naval Division was one of the most respected and feared in the British Army and attracted many of the leading personalities of the day. Being Transport Officer he must have shown previous skill with horses which ties in with family trade and his occupation of farmer on demobilisation. personal communication
