Tree 16. Descendants of Philippus MICHELMORE
(Buckfastleigh 157x)
This is the earliest of the four Buckfastleigh trees, and the only one it has been possible to trace across the period 1642-1672 for which almost all church records are lost. No DNA evidence is currently available to indicate its relation to the others (Trees 17, 18 and 19). A discussion of possible links is available here.
The earliest members of this tree were Buckfastleigh churchwardens or gentlemen. However, later descendants were predominantly tradesmen and small farmers.
Migration away from Buckfastleigh began when George sailed to Victoria, Australia, in 1855. George's nephew George moved to London in the 1870s, followed by another nephew Robert in the following decade. In the next generation, Harry and his brother William Hayman emigrated to the USA in the early 1900s. In 1912, Robert also emigrated to the USA.
Notice that, in the 17th century records, forenames were frequently recorded in their Latin form: Gratia (Grace), Guilielmus and Wilhelmus (William), Johannes (John), Maria (Mary), Petrus (Peter), Philippus (Philip) and Robertus (Robert).
Underlining (if any) indicates changes made at the latest update.

It is possible that Robert initially stayed with Harry, his first cousin once removed, who was living near Lawrence MA in 1910. Robert's wife and child followed him to the USA two years later.
In the period 1930-1950, Emma was living with her son Kenneth. |
