Further details on Elkanah's life are available here, and a newspaper article summarising his life is available here.
A map showing where Elkanah’s Tasmanian descendants lived is available here.
There are errors in the 1842 and 1843 census returns, both in listing the ages of Elkanah's children and whether they were born before arrival in Tasmania. However, the records do show that the entire family was living together.
The fact that William's family placed the 1863 notice in a Balarat newspaper suggests they thought he was at the goldfields.
The existence of a ninth child is suggested by the fact that the 1843 census records one more child than in 1842.

The Merchant Navy has Jabez's date of birth as 1Mar1801, but this is clearly incorrect.
The evidence points to a close friendship between this family and that of Thomas STOCKMAN [Tree 900]: Thomas named one of his daughters Maria Mitchelmore STOCKMAN; the Mary STOCKMAN who was living with Jabez in 1860 was another daughter; the Percival STOCKMAN who was their naturalisation witness was Thomas's son; and Jabez's wife Maria was the sister of Thomas's wife Sarah LANGDON. |

Memorial to Peter and Maria
Maria was a younger sister of the Abraham MOREY who married Peter's sister Ellen.
In relation to average earnings, Maria's estate would have been equivalent to about $500,000 today.
Presumably the editors of the 1931 Wise's Directory had not checked that their data on Maria were up to date.
A selector was a person who had been allotted a relatively small plot of Crown land. If he cultivated the land effectively, he became its owner after three years.
