SOUTHERN SOUTH HAMS

Tree 02. Descendants of Thomas MUCHAMORE
(Stokenham 168x)

This tree is one of four trees that have been traced back to Stokenham in the mid 17th century, but it seems to have a quite different Y-DNA pattern from the others (Tree 05, Tree 08 and Tree 09) and therefore probably has a different origin. A discussion of the relationship between the various southern South Hams trees and subtrees is available here.

Most of the members of this tree had moved away from Stokenham into neighbouring parishes by the end of the 18th century. The first person to move away from Devon was Thomas, who moved to Cornwall in 1822. Half a century later, his son Thomas's widow Elizabeth emigrated to the USA with three of their children; most of her descendants have lived in California, Oklahoma and Colorado. Another early emigrant was William, who moved to Ontario, Canada, in the 1830s; his descendants* (who go by the surname MUCHMORE) still live mainly in that province. William emigrated with his family to Texas in 1872, preceded by his eldest son William two years earlier; this family bears the surname MITCHAMORE (although some have shortened it to MITCHMORE) and has largely remained in Texas. Others to leave Devon include Mary Ann, who moved to London in the 1860s; George, who moved to South Wales in the 1870s to be followed by his nephew Frederick George in the 1890s; and Frederick's brother Ernest Vernon, who lived in Singapore for about 20 years and returned to England in 1919.

*Further details of William's descendants are available on the MUCHMORE Family Association web site. Most of our data on his descendants have been taken (by kind permission) from that site; for these data, the sources are not stated below.

Underlining indicates the latest update (#32).

It is not clear how a yeoman could have become a pauper within two years of marrying.

Since there was only one Michael M*CH*MORE living in Devon around this time, we have to assume that the clerk made an error when writing the name of Mary’s mother in the baptism register.

Richard NUNN was buried 27Jun1790 Blackawton.

Chaffey's Lock is No. 37 on the Rideau Canal, which runs between Ottawa and Kingston ON.  The canal was built as a military supply route, but after it was opened in 1832 it also provided a strong stimulus to immigration. The Rideau Canal was built by the Royal Engineers, a sister corps to the Sappers and Miners, and it is possible William travelled to Ontario with them. Brewers Mills also lies on the Rideau Canal.

A map showing the places where William and most of his descendants lived is available here.

It was common practice at the time for parishes to require a female who married a man from another parish to settle in his parish, if there was any danger they might become a charge on her parish. The text of the 1830 removal order is available here.
